Immune cells need energy to multiply and make antibodies against pathogens. That energy comes in the form of ATP made in the mitochondria of immune cells, like white blood cells. AstaReal® Astaxanthin increased ATP production by 12-14% in both younger Beagles (average 2.97 yr old) and older Beagles (average 10.71 yr old) who were fed natural astaxanthin for 16 weeks. The white blood cells of older dogs given natural astaxanthin had increased ATP-producing mitochondrial enzyme levels by as much as 600% after 8 weeks.

Natural Astaxanthin supported cell-mediated and humoral immune response in dogs after 16 weeks. In the same study, natural astaxanthin lowered the concentrations of circulating CRP in response to the vaccination challenge and reduced oxidative damage to DNA. Antioxidant support is important for immune cells because of the high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids in immune cell membranes, which makes immune cells particularly sensitive to oxidative damage by free radicals.
