Overweight & Obese Companion Dogs on the Rise
Weight gain in companion dogs is a growing problem that impacts pet health and their owner’s expenses. Overfeeding, lack of exercise, breed, and any existing medical conditions may contribute to weight gain. One in three companion dogs are overweight, meaning they are 10-20% above their ideal weight. A dog is considered obese when the dog is more than 20% over ideal weight. Banfield Applied Research and Knowledge reported a 158% increase in obesity among companion dogs between 2007 and 2016.
