The Nutrients That Make Energy
Muscles use carbohydrates, lipids and protein as energy sources during exercise. Carbohydrates may burn the fastest, but they also lead to lactic acid build up, energy crashes, and an increase in free radicals, called Reactive Oxygen Species {ROS). ROS form when muscle metabolism ramps up during exercise. Consistent exercise and training increases ROS and muscle damage, leading to inflammation and prolonging muscle soreness, which limits endurance. ROS also oxidizes the enzyme CPT I on the mitochondrial membrane, decreasing its efficiency. This CPT I enzyme is important for using fat as a fuel for making sustained energy.
